So, Reese, the other night at that awards show you said, “so people out there who are feeling silenced by harassment, discrimination, abuse… time is up. We see you. We hear you. And we will tell your stories.” Well, I’m here and I’m sick of being silenced and I am so ready and girl, I got what you want! You name it - compelling stories - film/tv/books - I’ve got it!
I’ve been here, toiling, writing, enduring one rejection after another for fifteen years, working. I’ve been mothering my awesome kids, endeavoring and ultimately living ‘my best life’ and all the time, despite being told 'you should write an action film, no one will buy a female-driven drama.' But, no - I’ve been writing our stories - every single chance I could get! From the empowerment of female friendship, to the fantastical rom coms, to the gritty female cop to the regal stay-at-home mom, I’ve been telling these stories and even winning awards in many festivals! But, still, despite the awards and being told the 'writing was good' the male gatekeepers slammed the door in my face - time and again. I have heard all the things. All the bullshit, “it’s not the right time for romantic comedy” or “the market is not great for women’s fiction.” Well, I’m not just a writer - I'm an audience member and my female, and male, friends are audience members - and dammit - we want those stories!
The tide has turned in Hollywood! Time is up! Being a woman and a mother and screenwriter is my purpose. I am here to serve! I’m ready for you Reese, et. al. Let’s do this!
